Plastic Bag Free Pledge announced for Southampton International Boat Show

As part of its Sustainability Pledge at the Southampton International Boat Show this year, British Marine is requesting that exhibitors do not have or use plastic bags on their stands. This small change for exhibitors will have a big impact and be very visible to show visitors.

In addition to the pledge, The Sustainable Exhibiting Guide has been produced by British Marine and is supported by The Green Blue, a joint initiative between British Marine and the RYA. The guide not only encourages companies to also sign up to a sustainability pledge but it also sets out clear actions that both the organisers and exhibitors will do to minimise the impact of the show on the environment.

In response to International Plastic Bag Free Day (03 July), British Marine is asked all members and Southampton International Boat Show exhibitors to avoid the use of any plastic bags and highlight this commitment through their websites or social media on Friday 02 July. For the 9th edition of International Plastic Bag Free Day, scores of organisations and hundreds of citizens around the world took action to raise awareness on the environmental impact and hazards of single-use plastic bags and promote more sustainable solutions. Join them and show your support using the hashtag: #PlasticBagFree

The Green Blue at the Southampton International Boat Show

If you’re visiting this year’s Show don’t forget to visit The Green Blue stand (J117 – Ocean Hall) where you’ll be able to meet The Green Blue team and find information and advice on sustainable boating, such as boating around wildlife, oil and fuel use, antifouling and invasive species prevention. Discover sustainable marine products from The Green Blue’s Business Directory, many of which will be on display including ropes and sportwear made from recycled plastic waste, eco-friendly cleaning products and bilge filters to extract oil when pumping out. And you’ll also be able to get hands-on by mimicking the reseeding of seagrass on our seabed by making your own meadow ‘seed bomb’ to take home and grow in the garden! This educational activity is being run as part of the LIFE ReMEDIES Project aiming to restore and conserve seagrass in UK waters.

The Green Blue will also be presenting on the Foredeck Stage and elsewhere throughout the show:

10 Sept. 11.30am – 12.30pm Exhibitor Sustainability Awards

13 Sept. 1.30pm – 2.30pm Single-Use Plastic Accreditation (Fore Deck Stage)

15 Sept. 1pm – 2pm Launch of Clean Marina (Fore Deck Stage)

17 Sept. 11.30am – 12.30pm Environment Panel Discussion (Fore Deck Stage)
