Coastal Beach Clean for Clipper 2024

Rubbish by the water's edge

Join RYA Scotland in Oban on 14 July for a Coastal Beach Clean Up in preparation for the Clipper Round the World Race.

Location: Dunstaffnage Castle

Time & date: 11am on 14 July

As boat users, we love and use our beautiful Scottish coastline. But, we also recognise that keeping these spaces litter free can pose a challenge – particularly in remote locations. In preparation for the Clipper Round the World Race stopover in Oban this July, RYA Scotland are heading across to make sure the beaches are looking spic and span with the invaluable help of the GRAB Trust. They’re bringing together members of the boating community, local groups, and the wider public to support The Green Blue.

For participants who enjoy getting afloat, they’ll also be promoting The Green Blue Boating Pledge – which encourages water users to Respect, Protect, and Enjoy our inland and coastal waters.

Can’t make it to Oban?

But, we understand not everyone can make it to Oban – and so we’re encouraging you to do the same in your localities over the summer. Perhaps there’s already a beach clean planned in your area? Check out  the Marine Conservation Society, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Scottish Coastal Clean Up, Fishing for Litter Scotland & Ullapool Sea Savers to see what beach cleans and litter drop off resources are near you.

But, remember – organised beach cleans aren’t the only way to have an impact.

We hope you can be inspired to make a difference in a small way – taking away more litter than you produce when out and about, and making the most of the access we get as sailors to lesser visited locations where rubbish may wash up.

Further information

For more info on where to access litter picking equipment, check out some of the GRAB Trust pick up points using their helpful map. And to find locations which might be in need of some TLC (specifically in the Argyll & Bute area), check out the GRAB Trust’s map of Marine Conservation Society data.

If you do happen to get out there and collect some rubbish – let us know! Tag us on social media and let’s see what positive impact we can make together.
